For those that know me, they know how each year I try to improve my election campaigns. When I look back at 2001 when I first got involved in Local Politics things in Wigan have improved and I take credit for a number - not all - for those.
Back in 2001 elections leaflets were crappy photocopy leaflets on rubbish paper. I then said we need to improve this, so I was the first to bring in full colour and glossy leaflets. A couple of years later Labour copied, which is OK.
The size was A4 and sometimes they were not folded or tri-folded or doubled folded. Then in 2006 I picked up the game again to A3 and folded like a booklet. It went down really well.
Between that and 2006 there were smaller leaflets and I got over the top with each campaign with 2 or even 3 A3 leaflets - too much.
Last year, Labour had for the first time, an A3 tri-folded and I liked it so I have done that layout and it has worked really well I find.
This year I have done the Youtube video and that went down well with thousands of people viewing it and I am sure I will be doing more of these and I am sure the others will follow me again.
But each campaign you get feedback and the vibe on the street and in 2012 I won with 60% of the vote and the vibe was really good and that was the best vibe I have ever had. However, even before we have got to Polling Day this has been the best election campaign I have been involved with. Even if I don't win it is the best. The feedback on the street is by far the best I have ever had in 19 years of elections and the 3 biggest issues are
Brexit - people are hating the 2 main parties for the mess
Corbyn - The amount of Labour supporters that have contacted me and said they will be voting me because they do not like the Labour Leader. Interesting!
Corruption. - people are sick of the corruption with the Bryn illegal sacking, Donna Hall getting bent cps to do serious dirty work - that is now being investigated by GMP. Then the fact Labour has used Tax Payers money to pay for their election leaflets.
I am sure that ever working candidate will have stories to tell and one for me in this election is when I handed over a leaflet to a gentleman who said - "I F**king hate you!" OK, I better walk on not getting a vote here I thought. Then he said, " I hate the fact I am voting for you too" OK now he has my attention. I respond, "Why?" He replied, " Because I hate what the 2 parties are doing and I believe we need someone in there to get things sorted and I believe the only person to do that is you!". Wow. I will take it - every vote counts...lol.
I will be out later today campaigning again and even tomorrow. I'm fighting for every vote and Thursday 2nd May support myself in Shevington and Cllr George Fairhurst in Standish - who also has had an amazing response as it is clear he is loved with Standish residents.
