...Breaking News...Attack in Standish....

It is being reported that a person was attack last night about midnight at the side of Tim's takeaway on Collingwood Street. I am hearing that the person was attacked by being hit by a brick. The area was cordoned off by the police and they have just recently left. It is being reported that they had the number markers on the ground, so that would tell me they are taking it very seriously and it must have been a bad attack. When I learn more and the full facts, I will let people know on here.

On a separate note I can't remember anything like this happening in Standish before but one thing that I have seen is more scroates being moved into Standish. Now I am not saying it is one of them that has either been attacked or indeed did the attack but I am making an observation here that some less desirable s are being moved into the area and I people are reporting this to me as well. The drug problem in Standish is growing and the Police are now doing an operation to target people in a certain area with drugs, again something that I can't remember has happened again. The reason why some of these people are being moved in is that the Council and the housing unit for the Council say that if these people are moved into a nice area like Standish then they will act better. That is not true they bring their druggie friends into the area and make the area worse.

I know me and the other Ward Cllrs will be asking for a meeting with the Council, Wigan and Leigh housing and the Police to discuss this growing problem.

  1. I've heard of two other stabbings in Standish. It's always been a hellhole

  2. i've also noticed this over the past few years that there are more and more people in standish that are not from the area and are on drugs or drink.

Like you say if you are an alcoholic or druggie then you will be friends with those types of people, and obviously they will then most probably move to the area.

Standish has always had a people taking drugs going back to the 80's but it has been well hidden, but because there is a wider range of drugs for them to get hold of now the problem has got worse, especially with other drug addicts moving into the area.

    1. Obviously you don't go in Potters or, I would guess, any of the other Pubs in Standish. Additionally, most people who drink or socialise at weekends do so because they've been working all week.

  4. So what you are saying is take them out of standish and let some other area cope with them....very nice cllr.

    1. You got the idea. They have come from other areas. There is one from another part of Wigan and they said shove him in Standish and he will be better. All he's done is brought his friends from the other area. If they kept him there then him and their friends would not be blighting our streets.

    2. I have heard that a number of undesirables from other council estates in the borough have been relocated to Standish in order to "cleanse" the areas where they come from. Obviously, they were a problem there, so why bring them and place them amongst other "problems" ..... I know of two families who are trying to move back to Standish and are in need of a council house so it's no wonder that they keep waiting! On top of that, there a many people in Standish living in Council homes and earning a decent salary .... may be it's time for them to move on too!!

    1. A lot of people are saying the same things and you only have to look in certain areas where houses are going up for sale left right and centre because they want to get out before it gets that bad.

  6. I grew up in a small village in another area and over time they built more and more houses and filled many with housing association and moved in people with drug problems and other troubles. Over the years areas became run down, Shops with shutters to stop windows being smashed, shopping centre with graffiti, drugs, litter, parks vandalised. police out nearly every weekend due to fighting in the pubs and in the streets.
When i met my husband he moved to be with me but never settled and once we had children he wanted to move back to Standish. It has been lovely to have parks for the my children to play in when they were younger and a shopping centre that is worth going into.
But saddens me to see so many changes and not for the better that are similar to those i have seen before where a great place to live may then become a place you cant wait to move out of!

  12. I love the fact that I have found the blog, thanks to a younger generations help. At the beginning of the election campaign I hated the Fairhurst's and would not have voted for them under any circumstances, or so I thought. However, a man came and delivered a letter to our door during the campaign. I asked what it was as I was doing the garden at the time. This cap wearing man told me I said I didn't want it and he asked why I told him I hated the Fairhurst's. Again he asked why. I told him some things that I had heard. After about 10 or 15 minutes he introduced himself as Gareth Fairhurst. I stood my ground on the what I had just said but we talked then for a further 20 minutes and it was one of the most pleasant chats I had with any politician. What I liked about was the fact that he defended what he had said in certain cases what I had heard and stood his position. He didn't argue or try and appease me. At the end I said to him, "Do you know what ? I am going to vote for you." He said why? I said because your not as bad as I heard you were, to which Gareth laughed and said, " OK you can vote for us but on one condition." When I asked what that was, he replied, "Don't tell any one I'm a nice guy" with a smile. A sense of humour as well and it was good he could take the mickey out of himself.

So why tell that story on this blog? Well I have seen and heard that some people don't like the word scroates being used and yes it is language that I wouldn't normally use myself but I can see why Gareth may have used this word and on another site he has defended himself to the hilt on this post, hence why I wanted to find this blog and see it myself. And no matter what people think of Gareth he says something and if people don't like it he doesn't mind and he will not try and appease everyone just for the sake of votes, as I found out in my chat with him where he didn't once try and turn me he just stuck up for what he believed in to me. To me that is leadership and I find very few leaders these days in politics.

    Carry on the work Gareth.

  13. Everywhere has problems and there is no escaping this. Sadly there is no end to crime.
It is a cruel fact of life and more often than not it is the innocent that suffer.
However unless it is brought under control it will escalate until it is too late.
Everyone who commits a crime has a reason, weather it's stealing to feed a family, Upbringing, revenge, frustration with the system.
Real help needs to be available to these people.
So...Where is the police presence in all of this?
A couple of Community support officers that are rarely seen are no deterent, no offence intended.
When was the last time anyone saw a patrol car in the area?
With the intended building of more houses, which I am against, but it looks inevitable, It isn't a good advertisement to buyers looking to move into the area. They are moving into an area that had a good reputation but the new medical centre can hardly cope with patients now, The waiting times are worse than ever.
Traffic congestion is ridiculous and drivers are still turning the wrong way at the lights.
Standish high school will not be able to cope with extra influx of children.
Sorry if I'm going off on one but I do care about the place I live in but it seems that the authorities just see Standish as a gold bucket that they are covering with rubbish.
And what can Joe Public do? Realistically? Take it and live with it.

  14. I work in Standish every day and have done for the past twenty odd years, I cant remember anywhere being transformed as much as Standish has at one time you knew everybody not any more there are more and more drunks and drug addicts walking the street day and night, there is a residential home in kingshill court that was for people with learning difficulties but they have all more or less been moved out to different areas and is now being filled with drink and drug addicts, I know a lot of the staff there are talking about leaving because they have the police there all the time.I believe the lad that commited the assault is a local lout that has been in trouble many times before maybe this time he will get the punishment he deserves but its a bad sign in any village when banks and building societies start to leave and all that opens in there place is takeaways, charity shops and bookies I think Standish has been dumped for a long time now. ,

  16. I feel that some are being judgemental here. Everyone should be given another chance. Perhaps police should be monitoring the activity around the telephone box at the end of Collingwood street, potters and the shamrock. We have a significant amount of elderly people living in Standish and some are feeling threatened by certain behaviours. Surely as a community we should be reporting any peculiar activity. If you think it's wrong it normally is wrong. So please have more police presence, monitor the areas of concern and most importantly make our community feel safe.
